Industry Activites 2018-2019

New Member BBQ

On September 19th, Block and Bridle and Gator Collegiate Cattle Women co-hosted the new member welcome BBQ. This dinner gave both new and old members the chance to mingle and meet. Attendees had the chance to some amazing pork sandwiches and sides provided by the old members. Once everyone had their fill, there was an inflatable obstacle course waiting outside. A relay race was held between new and old members where new members took the win.

2018 Halloween Social

Block and Bridle hosted a Halloween social on October 30th. There were prizes given for best male, best female and best couple costumes. Eden Miller won best female for her costume as Dale Brisby. Jacob Lehman won best male in his chicken costume. Samantha Forjan and David Dominguez took home best costume for their unique rendition of Lilo and Stitch.

2018 Little International Livestock Show

Our 2018 Little I was a huge success and allowed us to welcome 33 new members! Over the course of several weeks, our inductees practiced with their various species in order to prepare for the show. We had some amazing coaches that volunteered their time to help the participants perfect their techniques. These coaches included Tucker McDaniel and Jaime Willis for swine, Ashley Franco and Gloria Rodriguez for sheep, Kaitlyn Staszewski and Shelby Howell for beef and Sam Sullo and Ashley Ohmstede for equine. Many of our old members volunteered to help with set up and dinner. At the show, a winner was chosen for each species, followed by a round robin, in which the species winners alternated showing each of the other species. This year's sweetheart was Anne Sheerin. After round robin, our grand and reserve champions were declared.  The 2018 grand and reserve champions were Elizabeth Tauchen and Shelby Kirton. Block and Bridle would like to thank Vice President, Kaycie Miller for organizing the event as well as all of our judges for their time and expertise. We would also like to thank Sam Sullo for serving as an emcee, and all of our old members, department faculty, and advisors! We would not be able to make this all happen without you all!

Grand Champion: Elizabeth Tauchen

Reserve: Shelby Kirton

Boots on the Hill 2019

This February, Block and Bridle had the opportunity to start the semester off with a trip to Tallahassee, Florida. Small groups of students joined together with members of the Florida Cattlemen's Association to lobby for legislation affecting agricultural research and extension. Students had the opportunity to talk to legislators about the industry they are passionate about.

2019 NCBA and Block and Bridle National Convention

From Jan 29th-Feb 2nd, sixteen of our members attended the National Block and Bridle Convention hosted alongside NCBA in New Orleans, LA. This five day event allowed the attendees to experience Block and Bridle on a national scale, network with some of the cattle industry's best and brightest, see the newest technologies in the trade show, and tour some of the most amazing ranches, stables and culture in the South. Overall, the experience was well worth the drive.

Animal Science Spring Banquet

The Animal Science Department finished the year out with the annual Spring Banquet. Block and Bridle was joined by Gator Collegiate Cattlewomen, the UF Dairy Science Club, as well as the livestock, equine, meats, meat animal evaluation and dairy evaluation teams. Each club took the opportunity to recognize their outgoing and incoming officer teams, advisors and exceptional members. Clubs also made sure to congratulate and thank their graduating seniors for their hard work and dedication.
